UMATEX composites presented at JEC World 2019 in Paris

14 March 2019

UMATEX (Rosatom) has presented new products, projects and developments in composite materials for different industries at the largest international composites exhibition JEC World 2019.

The presentation took place in the framework of the "Products Show" on March 13 in Paris at the UMATEX booth. The event was attended by 80 representatives of Russian and international companies working in composites.

Elina Bilevskaya, Public Relations Director of UMATEX and "Products Show" presenter, reported that in 2018 UMATEX, manufacturer of modern carbon fiber for the Russian market, has purchased 100% of Prepreg-SKM JSC, one of the largest producers of carbon fiber-based fabrics and prepregs in Russia. Consequently, UMATEX has consolidated the assets used at the main processing stages of polymeric composite materials: carbon fiber and semi-finished products based on it, i.e. fabrics and prepregs for strategic industries.

Yury Svistunov, Deputy General Director of UMATEX, said in his speech that the company is no longer just a carbon fiber manufacturer, it offers comprehensive solutions in the form of fabrics, prepregs and finished products: "Yes, we produce carbon fiber and bulid up projects to develop new types of carbon fiber. For instance, this year we are able to offer new carbon fiber grades: 24K for pultrusion and winding, as well as 48K of excellent quality for different applications. We also manufacture fabrics and prepregs for strategic industries. This year, we are staking on new partnerships in end products: sports requisites, automotive and motorcycle components, construction engineering solutions, high-modulus carbon fiber materials". Yuri Svistunov has also presented composite solutions for nuclear power plant construction: "We are currently focused on testing the reliability of each solution using materials based on our carbon fibers and, to this effect, reach out to the expertise of NPP design engineers".

Dmitry Kogan, Deputy General Director of UMATEX, told about new products for the automotive industry, sports requisites business, about materials that can be used in the aerospace industry and other sectors: "Our prepregs based on the binder ACM 1216 are used for the manufacturing of the new-generation composite hockey sticks "Zaryad". Our R&D team has been able to create a binder with a unique tensile strength capacity (up to 7%) and impact resistance, which is critical for products such as hockey sticks that are subject to high alternating strain."

A virtual hockey competition was organized at the UMATEX booth during the JEC World. Everyone could try their hand at ice hockey, driving virtual pucks through virtual gates with the help of VR headsets. During the "Products Show", the winners of the virtual competition who scored the highest number of points were awarded composite hockey sticks.

A motorcycle with composite components of the world-famous motorcycle racing team from Italy, Kawasaki Puccetti Racing, was displayed at the UMATEX booth. UMATEX is a sponsor of Kawasaki Puccetti Racing team, one of the participants of the Superbike World Championship WorldSBK.

The UMATEX booth also advertised Carbon Store, the new project which presents souvenirs made of carbon fiber: glasses in a composite frame, pens, purses, wallets, tyre valve stem caps, frames for car license plates, cigarette cases, composite caskets, various phone covers and much more.
